Jewelry Configurators: How They Work and What They Cost

A configurator lets a shopper build the piece on your product page: pick the metal, stone, and setting, watch the piece update, then buy it or send it in as a quote.

A jewelry configurator sits on a product page and lets the shopper assemble the piece: metal, stone, setting, size, engraving. The piece on screen updates with each choice, the price updates with it, and the finished design goes into the cart or reaches you as a quote request. A ring builder is the engagement-ring version: pick a setting, pick a diamond from live inventory, see them together.

Two kinds

Image-swap configurators show pre-rendered photos and switch the image when the shopper changes an option. They load fast and look exactly as good as the photos you feed them, and every combination you offer is a photo you have to make. True 3D configurators render the piece from a model, so any combination of options works without new photography, and the shopper can rotate the piece. Which costs more varies by app, not by technology.

What one costs

Shopify jewelry apps run from about $50 to $345 a month. General configurators like Zakeke and Kickflip charge less monthly and take a percentage of each custom order, which at jewelry order values usually matters more than the subscription. Managed services start around $500 a month plus implementation, and agency builds run to a few thousand dollars upfront. The full breakdown, tool by tool, is in the configurator pricing guide.

Where they run

Most jewelry configurators are Shopify apps and run only there. If your store is on Shopify, nearly everything on the market works and you can pick from the app store. Off Shopify, you need a tool that embeds as HTML; here is how that works on WooCommerce, Wix, Webflow, and custom sites.

Picking one

Start from what you sell. Engagement rings with live diamond inventory point to a ring builder with a diamond feed. A catalog of pieces with metal and stone options needs no feed, which opens the whole field. We compare it in the 2026 configurator comparison.

Ruby Kinglet makes one: our customizer runs on Shopify with cart integration, embeds on any site that takes HTML, and charges no fee per order. You brand it and manage the options yourself.

Common questions

What is a jewelry configurator?

A tool on a product page that lets the shopper build a piece by choosing metal, stone, setting, and size, with the image and price updating as they choose. The finished design goes to the cart or arrives as a quote request.

How much does a jewelry configurator cost?

Shopify jewelry apps run about $50 to $345 a month. General configurators charge a percentage per custom order on top of a lower subscription. Managed services and agency builds cost more upfront.

Do configurators work outside Shopify?

Most jewelry configurators are Shopify-only apps. For WooCommerce, Wix, Webflow, or a custom site, use a tool that embeds as HTML, such as Ruby Kinglet, or a multi-platform general configurator.

What is the difference between a configurator and a ring builder?

A ring builder is a configurator specialized for engagement rings: the shopper picks a setting, then a diamond from live inventory, and sees the combined ring. General configurators handle any piece with options.
