Why 88% of Engagement Rings Are Now Custom (2026)

Custom used to be the exception you paid extra for. In 2025 it became the default: 88% of US couples custom edited or custom designed their engagement ring, per The Knot’s study of 10,474 couples. The reasons are economic before they are sentimental, and they compound: the stone got cheap, the budget moved to design, and the tools for showing a couple their ring before it exists got fast.

The stone got cheap, the design got the budget

The engine is lab-grown pricing. 61% of engagement rings now carry a lab-grown center stone, up 239% since 2020, while a popular 1 carat stone lost 76% of its retail price over the same period (Edahn Golan). The average ring fell to $4,600, and the average center stone grew to 1.9 carats. The Knot’s researchers describe where the freed budget goes: thicker bands, more elaborate settings, bigger and bolder design. When the stone stops consuming the budget, the design becomes the purchase.

Custom is also how differentiation survives cheap stones. When any retailer can sell the same lab-grown carat, the setting is the product. Couples sense the same thing from the other side: over half of proposers report pressure to make the moment unique, and nearly 9 in 10 still propose with a ring in hand.

Who sells custom, and with what

The sellers structurally best at this are independents, the largest US jewelry channel at 35% of sales, because custom work needs a bench and a conversation more than it needs a national brand; the numbers behind that are in the independent jeweler, by the numbers. What changed on their side is the cost of showing the ring before making it. Concept renders that took a CAD designer days now take software minutes, which turned design iteration from a cost center into a sales tool. Disclosure: Ruby Kinglet is ours and is built for exactly that loop, from component-based design through CAD export and an embeddable ring builder; 88% is, among other things, the demand curve it exists to serve. What a commission costs end to end is in what custom jewelry actually costs.

Common questions

What percentage of engagement rings are custom?

88% of US engagement rings bought in 2025 were custom edited or custom designed (The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study, 10,474 couples). Customization is now the default way rings are bought, not a premium option.

Why are so many engagement rings custom now?

Lab-grown stones cut the center-stone cost by half or more (a 1 carat stone is down 76% at retail since early 2020, per Edahn Golan), and couples moved the freed budget into design: thicker bands, elaborate settings, distinctive pieces. Design software made iterating on a custom piece fast enough to be part of the sale.

Does a custom engagement ring cost more?

Not on average anymore. The average US ring fell to $4,600 in 2025 even as 88% of rings involved customization, because the stone got cheaper faster than design work got expensive. Stone-led designs are cheaper to commission than five years ago; heavy gold designs are not.
