What Custom Jewelry Actually Costs (2026)

A custom piece is priced as a stack: design, CAD, printing, casting, setting, the stone, and the jeweler’s margin. In 2026 the stack is moving in two directions at once. Stones are the cheapest they have been in a decade, gold is the most expensive it has ever been, and the design and CAD labor in the middle is being compressed by software. Custom got cheaper where the stone dominates the piece and dearer where the metal does.

The cost stack, line by line

Setting, finishing, and the jeweler’s margin sit on top and are quoted per piece; no service publishes a standard rate for them. Casting services price labor in weight tiers because a small piece takes nearly the same setup as a large one.

Why the same commission costs less and more than in 2020

The stone was once the majority of a custom budget. A 1 carat lab-grown center stone has lost about three quarters of its retail price since early 2020, which is why the average engagement ring fell to $4,600 even while everything else inflated. The metal moved the other way: gold averaged a record $3,431 an ounce in 2025 and peaked at $5,405 in January 2026 (World Gold Council), and independent jewelers repriced gold items about 30% upward in 2025 (Tenoris, via JCK). A stone-led halo ring is cheaper to commission than five years ago. A heavy gold signet is not, and record gold is reshaping design itself.

The middle of the stack is where software bites. Design and CAD used to be a fixed few hundred dollars of skilled labor per piece; AI tools now produce the concept renders in minutes and, on some platforms, the CAD file itself. Disclosure: Ruby Kinglet is ours and is one of those platforms, with STL, OBJ, and GLB export on its $35 plan and editable 3DM on the $179 Studio plan. The full software field and its prices are in what jewelry CAD design costs and what professional jewelry design costs.

What this means for a buyer

Quotes vary because the stack varies. A shop quoting $1,200 and a shop quoting $3,500 for the same brief are usually making different assumptions about stone origin, metal weight, and how much design iteration is included, and 88% of couples now go through some version of this process (The Knot). Ask for the quote broken into stone, metal, and work; every honest bench can give it, and it makes two quotes comparable in a way the totals never are.

Common questions

How much does custom jewelry cost in 2026?

The average US engagement ring, the most common custom purchase, cost $4,600 in 2025 (The Knot). Underneath: design and CAD run $20 to $500 per design at typical complexity, casting labor starts around $2.50 per piece in silver or spot plus roughly $10 per gram in gold, and the stone and metal dominate the rest. Stone-led pieces got cheaper since 2020; heavy gold pieces got dearer.

Why did custom get cheaper if gold is at a record?

The stone fell faster than the metal rose. A 1 carat lab-grown stone lost 76% of its retail price between early 2020 and mid 2025 (Edahn Golan), while gold roughly doubled. Where the stone is most of the budget, the piece is cheaper. Where metal weight dominates, it is more expensive.

Is custom jewelry more expensive than buying from a case?

Not necessarily anymore. 88% of US engagement rings involved custom edits or full custom design in 2025, and the average spend fell to $4,600. Customization has become the normal way rings are bought rather than a premium add-on.

How much should I budget for the design stage?

Published rates run $20 to $300 for typical designs and $300 to $1,500 for complex pieces (Metalonyx), or $150 to $500 to hire a CAD designer per design (CAD Designer LA). AI design platforms compress this stage to a software subscription; Ruby Kinglet (ours) starts at $35 a month with manufacturable file export.
